Class 1A State Swimming: S-M's Beachy back in the finals

Email

MINNEAPOLIS — It wasn’t the best view.

In fact, it wasn’t a view at all, but Staples-Motley’s Jaelin Beachy was close to a record breaking performance during Friday’s Class 1A state swimming preliminaries at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Beachy, who swam in the third heat of the 100-yard breaststroke, was in the lane next to Albert Lea’s Lindsey Horejsi, who shattered the state, not just Class 1A, but the state record with a 1:00.43. The previous state record was 1:01.08 held by Champlin Park’s Abby Duncan.

“I was right next to her and my start wasn’t the best and that kind of threw me off, but I saw her at the beginning,” Beachy said. “Then after one of the walls I couldn’t’ see her at all. I figured she must be ahead of me, but I couldn’t see her. I just kept doing what I’ve been doing all season and it worked.”

It did work as Beachy advanced to Saturday’s championship final with a sixth-place 1:06.65. The top eight swimmers advance to the championship final. The eighth-place girl was Mahtomedi’s Andra Yechout with a 1:07.49.

Beachy’s seed time was a 1:06.58. She’s confident she can swim faster than her prelim time.

“I feel good,” she said. “I think I can go faster tomorrow. I’m just going to leave it all out there. It’s going to be my last race of the season so I’m just going to give it my all and see how it goes.”

Beachy also advanced to the consolation finals in the 50 free. She was on the bubble to make the finals, but swam an 11th-place time of 24.68.

“I’m happy I made it, but again, I was swimming well, but I forgot to look up to see where the wall was and when I did it was right there so my turn got a little tight. I dropped a little more time off of my seed time so I was happy about that.”

This will be the second final Saturday the Cardinals’ junior will compete in. She advanced to the finals of the 100 breaststroke last year.

“I’m just going to push myself tomorrow,” she said. “I’m a lot more calm than I was last year. The previous years I kind of freaked myself out. This year I’m just a lot more calm and that should help.”
