Gymnastics: Alexandria defeats Brainerd in opener

ALEXANDRIA — Opening night was a close one for the Brainerd Warriors, but they came out on the short end against Alexandria by a score of 135.5 to 132.95 on Thursday in a Central Lakes Conference showdown.

Brainerd’s Rachel Hoffman scored a 34.4 in the all-around competition, good for second place. That included a tie for first on the uneven bars, and a second-place finish on beam.

Jackie Caughey notched a third-place spot with an 8.8 on floor exercise, and Emmiline Klefsaas was a third-place finisher with a 8.925 on the vault.

“We had some really nice performances and made some mistakes,” said Warriors head coach Dave Maras. “It was our first meet of the year and that happens. I think this was a good start and shows us where we want to be.”

In the junior varsity meet, Brainerd’s Jenny Muesing won the all-around title and the Warriors defeated Alexandria 121.65-111.20.

Muesing won the all-around with a 30.18, and took first on beam. Claire LePage finished first on floor exercise and on vault, while Cami Harmer gained a win on bars.
