ST. CLOUD — Zean Baker made it back-to-back Tuesday.

The Brainerd Warriors senior followed up his first-place finish at Mt. Itasca Saturday with a first-place time of 17:10 at the St. Cloud Apollo Invite at Riverside Park in St. Cloud.

Baker’s victory coupled with top 10 finishes from Gerrit Garberich (sixth), Noah Baker (seventh) and Connor Gunsbury (10th) placed Brainerd second behind St. Cloud Tech.

“Zean’s on a tear right now,” said Brainerd head coach Mary Claire Ryan. “He was second on Thursday, first Saturday and first again today. Nick Proell of St. Cloud Tech, who beat Zean Thursday, was right behind Zean until he started to pull away. He did an excellent job of distancing himself from Nick and the rest of the field. He looked really strong the whole race.”

Little Falls Flyers Maria Hauer captured the girls race with a 21:00. That helped Little Falls to the girls team victory. Brainerd’s Allison Kosobud finished second in 21:08. Sarah Fairbanks placed eighth for the third place Warriors.

“Thursday Allison took a bad fall and it cost her a place,” Claire Ryan said. “Today she got tripped up a bit as they did laps and she started getting into the slower skiers and sot hat cost her a few seconds. Maria was very strong today, which she always is. But I was pleased with how Allison skied on the big hills. It was the best technique we’ve seen from her.”

The Flyers’ Mattia Hendrickson placed fourth and Chelsea Rutz finished fifth. Kaitlyn Giesenhoff scored a 10th-place finish for Little Falls

Brainerd’s Sara Whiteman was 13th and Gabrielle Haire placed 15th as the Warriors trailed second-place St. Cloud Cathedral by five points.

“We had some good surprises as we gave some younger skiers a shot at stepping up onto the varsity race. They handled themselves very well and of course we were delighted to be on snow.”
