Juniors Nick Goll and Justin Kuglin each won two individual events and were on two first-place relays as the Brainerd Warriors sank the St. Cloud Tech Tigers 109.5-76.5 in Thursday night’s Central Lakes Conference meet at Brainerd High School.

Goll paced the 200 and 500 freestyles while Kuglin won the 200 individual medley and 100 free.

Both were on the 200 free relay, with Luke Jacobsen and David Supinski, and on the 400 free relay, with Peder Smith and Josh McKeag.

“Nick is really swimming well,” Warriors coach John Zemke said. “That 200 free was a great win. In the 500, he was pretty much stroke for stroke with the kid from Tech. As a sophomore last year, Nick narrowly missed going to state. This year, he’s off to a good start. He’s swimming times he didn’t hit until the end of last year.

“Justin has eight wins in eight swims in the first two meets of the year. He’s just been fantastic in the water, anchoring relays, he’s swimming very well for this time of year.”

Other wins were by Supinski in the 50 free, McKeag in the 100 butterfly and Joe Wells in the 100 breaststroke.

“Josh has seven wins out of eight tries,” Zemke said. “He’s also swimming very well.”

The victory improved Brainerd to 2-0 before traveling to Willmar next Tuesday.

“Anytime we can go out and beat Alexandria and Tech the way we have — both very good programs — we’re off to a good start,” Zemke said. “We just have to keep getting in shape and do some major training the next few weeks.”
