Twenty points from Andre Thomas and 16 from Brandon Davis paved the way for Central Lakes College as it defeated the Fergus Falls Spartans 79-75 Saturday in the CLC Invitational to give Raiders coach Jim Russell his 300th career victory at the school.

Russell, whose first season at CLC was 1997-98, entered this season with a 295-120 career mark.

“The best part was that the 300 wins came from the guys that I have coached over all these years, and my coaching staff,” Russell said. “It was fun when I realized that my coaches on my staff, Ben Seevers and Scott Savor, played for me during my first win and now they’re still with me for my 300th.”

Seevers said it was an honor for him to be with Russell for his first and his 300th win.

“I don’t remember a lot of the games I played during college, but I remember being at the tournament in Ironwood, Mich., and we were the team that no one was taking seriously and we won both our games,” Seevers said. “It was a special feeling, being a player during his first win and to be an assistant coach for him now.

“It was nice for us to celebrate together, and now we’re all focused on getting the team to continue to get better this year.”

Kevin Kuefler and John Jedneak each added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Byran Gichaba followed with 10 points for the Raiders.

“I thought, overall, we played really well, the team is starting to come around,” said Jim Russell. “Fergus Falls has a lot of weapons and they shoot the ball well.

“It was a very good team effort, with a lot of strong individual leaders, like Kuefler and Jedneak with rebounding, and Davis and Thomas with scoring. It was good college basketball.”

The Raiders, who beat Ridgewater 76-70 in Friday’s first round, are now off until Jan. 4-5 when they host the CLC Winter Classic.

“Those were two very good wins to get before break,” Russell said.
