Nordic Skiing: Flyers and Rutz win, Brainerd boys second

ST. CLOUD — Zean Baker couldn’t make it a three peat, but he did lead the Brainerd Warriors boys to second place at Tuesday’s St. Cloud Cathedral Invite.

Baker placed fifth followed by Gerrit Garberich in sixth and Noah Baker in seventh. That wasn’t enough to overtake St. Cloud Tech, which secured the top three spots.

The Little Falls Flyers captured the girls team title thanks to Chelsea Rutz’s individual victory. Rutz won the freestyle event in 18:47.

Maria Hauer placed third, followed by Mattia Hendrickson in fifth and Kaitlin Geisenhof in sixth.

Brainerd’s Allison Kosobud placed fourth and Gabriella Haire placed ninth for the fourth-place Warriors girls.

“For the boys things didn’t go the best for us,” said Brainerd co-head coach Chris Hanson. “We have no excuses. We finished 5, 6 and 7 and that’s a ways off from Tech, who finished 1, 2 and 3. We need to revamp, rework and catch those guys.

“On the girls, we’re kind of seeing the same few teams ahead of us in Little Falls and Cathedral. You can throw Mora in there, too. We have some teams we’re watching and it’s going to be tough to catch them, but we’re going to work hard all year in order to do it.”
