Gymnastics: Warriors win first meet of season

Rachel Hoffman won the uneven parallel bars and was runner-up in the all-around competition as the Brainerd Warriors beat the Willmar Cardinals 135.375 to 134.850 in a Central Lakes Conference meet Thursday night.

“It was a lot better night for us,” said Warriors coach Dave Maras, whose team won its first meet of the season. “We left some stuff out there but we’ll keep plugging away and getting better.

“Everything is going in the right direction.”

Hoffman scored 8.8 to win the bars and accumulated a score of 34.2 in the all-around.

“When she does bars, she’s so effortless and clean,” Maras said. “We have some things we’re trying to put in to get her difficulty up.”

Hoffman paced a bar team that scored 32.6 and included runner-up Mikayla Cerney, Kianna Christensen, Emmiline Klefsaas and Morgan Visser.

“I was proud of our whole bar team,” Maras said., “We had a couple new kids on bars tonight that did well.”

Brainerd scored 35.45 on vault, its highest score in any of the four disciplines.

“On vault, we did the best we could. We scored the best we could with what we did,” Maras said.
