AREA BOYS BASKETBALL: New head coach takes over at W-DC

This may be Doug Haas’ first assignment as a head coach, but he’s ready to take the reins and lead the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines boys’ basketball team for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.

“I am excited about the opportunity to coach at this level,” Haas said in a news release.

Haas had been assistant boys basketball coach under head coach Tom VanErp, who resigned Dec. 21.

“We’ve got a good group of student-athletes who want to work hard,” Haas added. “Our goal is to step on the court, play hard and finish strong.”

Haas is a new face at W-DC Middle/High School. He was hired in the fall of 2012 as a physical education/health teacher. He has degrees in physical education and health, as well as a minor in coaching from Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

A native of Park Rapids, Haas was a three-sport athlete for the Panthers in football, basketball and baseball.

Haas was an assistant boys basketball coach at Fargo South under head coach Mike Hendrickson during the 2011-12 season.

“At Fargo South, I learned a great deal about coaching at a higher level of basketball from coach Hendrickson,” Haas said.

Wadena High School alumnus, John Paulson, a basketball standout for Wadena in the early 1980s, will continue to serve as assistant coach with Haas.
