Boys Swimming and Diving: Warriors swim to second at U of M

MINNEAPOLIS — Three seconds helped the Brainerd Warriors finish second in Saturday’s University of Minnesota Maroon and Gold Invite.

The Warriors competed in the Bronze Division and placed behind Central Lakes Conference rival Sartell, who Brainerd beat in Thursday’s dual meet.

Brainerd’s Josh McKeag scored a second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.20. The Warriors 200 medley relay of Luke Jacobsen, Joe Wells, McKeag and Supinski finished second as did the 400 free relay of Nick Goll, Justin Kuglin, Peder Smith and McKeag.

McKeag also scored a third in the backstroke.

“Josh swam a season best time in both of his events and the same with Peder Smith,” said Warriors head coach John Zemke. “He swam a lifetime best in the 200 IM and the second best time of his life in the 500 free.”

Smith was third in the 500 free, Kuglin was third in the 100 and 200 freestyles and the Warriors 200 free relay of Jacobsen, Goll, Kuglin and Supinski also finished third.

“Justin’s 200 freestyle was a lifetime best,” Zemke said. “He doesn’t swim it very often.

“As a team you can’t feel too disappointed about finishing second out of 16 teams. Each invite scoring system is a little different than a dual meet and we lost a lot of points in the 50 free where Sartell is so good.”
