The Warriors’ varsity took a day off and reworked its entire kick routine.

“New music was added to the beginning and a section was taken out of the middle,” Warriors coach Cindy Clough said. “All dancers were basically put in new places, so it is like starting over, but now the formations flow better and we think the routine will be more competitive once we clean it up.”

Friday, Jan. 11, the Warriors will perform in the Best of the Best Show at the University of Minnesota. The meet is hosted by the national champion U of M dance team.

“You have to be invited to be in the show and must be an upper-level team as they want to have a strong show. We are honored to get invited every year, but we do not always go as it ends up being an overnight that we have to fund raise to do,” Clough said. “We are excited to watch many of the college teams.”

The Warriors will compete at Lakeville South on Saturday, Jan. 12. Brainerd will perform only jazz at the show.

“We can only select one style and we will do jazz,” Clough said. “We would like the coaches from U of M to get a look at us and possibly give us some advice.

“We also have a dancer with goals set on the U of M (Grace Gilbertson) so it would be nice for them to watch her.”

Saturday at Lakeville, Clough said, “For kick we are really back to working as we changed everything. It has been basically like starting over. We still hope to do well and place near the top.

“Our kids have been great about absorbing and focusing on learning all the changes. In jazz, our big goal is to be up there with Duluth East. They are a contender in our section and we hope to place above them. Most of the other teams we have not seen yet this year so it will be fun to go up against them all.”
