ALPINE SKIING: Stone wins first FIS competition

Pequot Lakes High School senior Savannah Stone won the overall women’s giant slalom race for the first time and finished fourth overall in slalom in a Federation Internationale De Ski (FIS) event at Loch Lomond, Ontario, Canada, last weekend.

Stone recorded a first-place time of 1:19.56 in the women’s giant slalom Friday.

“It was raining and the conditions were pretty bad,” she said, “but then I took my runs, and I felt pretty good.

“When I was done with the first race, I was in first. I got a good second one and it all worked out. It was really exciting.”

After overall slalom competition Sunday, her time of 1:57.37 ranked fourth overall.

“Actually, everything froze and the whole hill was pretty icy, so that was kind of different skiing,” Stone said. “Saturday, I didn’t do as well. Sunday, I got used to the conditions and put down two good runs, and I ended up fourth so I was really pleased with that too.”

The field of racers included the St. Olaf College team and the fastest U-18 women in the Midwest and Ontario.
