Floor Hockey: Warriors open season with a win
After finishing last season with an 8-6 record and returning from the state tournament as consolation champions, the Brainerd Warriors adapted floor team hasn’t slowed down a bit despite losing five senior players.
Devin Annable, who recovered from a broken wrist over the summer, contributed two goals for the Warriors in a 4-1 season opening win against the Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs Wednesday night at Riverside Elementary School.
“Annable continued what he did in the state tournament last year with bringing it in and getting those quick shots off and that was great,” said Warriors head coach Todd Person.
Randy Volkmuth scored the other two goals. The Warriors shutout the Mustangs until the final three minutes of the contest.
For the Warriors, Brock Saatzer added two assists; and Dalton Schreier, Zachary Denny and Ray Borg each added one.
“Volkmuth did what we’ve been working on in practice — crashing the net — and he got a goal that way,” said Person. “All the other new players stepped up, too, and got to see what a game was like.”
Junior Harlee Annable returned to his second year as the main keeper as they head into Monday’s game against last year’s No. 3 team, Robbinsdale/Hopkins/MoundWest.
“This was an important win to get for us because we’re going against Robbinsdale next and they haven’t lost to Brainerd in three years,” said Person. “The kids needed to get the confidence up by getting this first win.”
