Boys Basketball: Blong, Brainerd survive Sartell
SARTELL — Jacob Blong tallied 20 points and eight rebounds helping the Brainerd Warriors sweep their season series over Sartell with Friday’s 60-45 Central Lakes Conference victory.
The Warriors remain unbeaten at 14-0 as Tony Sauer came off the bench to score 16 points and Jack Sauer scored 14 points to go with five assists and three steals.
“We played against a physical Sartell team and had some difficulty early with our motion cuts,” said Brainerd head coach Scott Stanfield. “We adjusted our cuts and ran some different sets, which really opened things up.”
The normally fast starting Warriors held a 28-26 halftime lead, but outscored Sartell 32-19 in the second half. Brainerd was able to get to the foul line 26 times compared to just 11 for Sartell.
Marcus Comstock collected 11 rebounds. Ian Haug added four assists and Jagar Hanson came off the bench to score five points.
“Our kids played with great poise the second half,” said Stanfield. “We got easy baskets off back cuts. Jagar came off the bench and hit a big three along with two free throws.”
The win moves Brainerd’s conference mark to 8-0. They travel to Rogers for a Section 8-4A show down Saturday.
