Area Wrestling: Gobblers win big over Ashland

AITKIN — Calen Curtiss, Jake Pederson and Chris Jackson each scored pins to lead the Aitkin Gobblers past Ashland in a non-conference match Friday.

Jared Novak also won by a major decision as the Gobblers captured their ninth straight dual victory.

PIERZ — Mitch Merlen’s decision win over Ryley Smude was the deciding match for Holdingford as they shocked Class 1A’s eighth-ranked Pierz Pioneers 29-28 in a Central Minnesota Conference dual Friday.

The loss ended a 21-dual win streak for the Pioneers.

Kolton Eischens and Curtis Brisk scored pins for Pierz. The Pioneers built a 22-13 lead before the Huskers scored the next 16 points to take control of the match.

Blake Miller went 3-0 to earn his fourth-straight first place finish at the tournament.

Josh Becker and Tyler Pogreba also captured first place finishes for the Cardinals
