SNOWMOBILE RACING: Area drivers compete in various events

The father/son team of Jeffrey and Nathan Schmidt traveled to Ogilvie to race in the Oval Racers Alliance vintage ice oval event last weekend.

It was Nathan’s first big oval event and he collected a third place in 500 Supermod fan trophy class and fifth in 440cc Superstock fan trophy class on a John Deere Sportfire.

Jeff had a first, second, third, fourth and fifth in the five Superstock/Supermod classes he entered. He was on a John Deere and in one class drove a Scorpion.

Next up for oval track racers is at Grey Eagle Feb. 16 and at Garrison Feb. 23-24.

Snocross

The ISOC national snocross was at Deadwood, S.D., last weekend.

Tyler Daudt of Longville on a Polaris was second in the Junior 16-17 final.

Brandon Herheim of Hackensack was seventh in the Sport 1 final on an Arctic Cat.

Matt Piche of Lakeshore was 13th in the Pro Open final on an Arctic Cat.

Cross country

The USXC Seven Clans I-500 will be at Thief River Falls Thursday through Saturday. It will be 500 miles for modern machines. Vintage machines (up to 1981) and classic (up to 1995) run approximately 200 miles Saturday.

Area racers expected to compete are CJ Vandeputte of Pillager, Nathan Moritz of Emily, Ryan Greening of Brainerd, all on Arctic Cats, and Cody Breitbach of Brainerd on a Ski-Doo, in the Semi Pro/Pro 3-day event.

Steve Sherwood of Pine River will be in the 1-day Vintage and Vintage Legends (+50) classes Saturday on a Polaris.

Van Guilder sets speed records

Tia Van Guilder set another NSSR world speed record Jan. 26 at Menomonie Wis.

Riding Ski-Doos, she set the record in a 1,000-foot run at 130.120 mph.

In the improved stock 1000cc class, she went 132.718 mph good for second place. In Pro Stock 1000, she was second with a speed of 141.176 mph.
