GYMNASTICS: Warriors finish fifth in CLC meet

WILLMAR — Mikayla Cerney finished sixth on floor exercise and 11th in all-around to lead the Brainerd Warriors in the Central Lakes Conference meet Saturday.

She scored (9.375) on floor and accumulated 35.375 points in the all-around competition to earn All-CLC honors.

Teammate Rachel Hoffman received All-CLC honors on the uneven bars.

Cerney placed 14th on bars, 11th on beam and 23rd on vault for the Warriors, who finished fifth in Saturday’s meet with 136.675 points. Brainerd finished fifth overall for the season when combining results of dual meets and the CLC meet. Cerney was the only Brainerd gymnast to finish in the top 10 of an event Saturday.

“It was a pretty good day,” Warriors coach Dave Maras said. “Our floor was the best it has been all season. We had a couple kids throw tsuks for the first time — Claire LePage and Kianna Christensen. Kianna just nailed hers, Claire was close.

“We had some good things happen. We swung nice bars. Unfortunately, we were first up on bars and that was pretty tough. Cerney had a wonderful day and many others did too. A lot of kids came through big-time. It wasn’t enough, of course, but it was still a good meet for us.”

St. Cloud Tech scored 149.425 points Saturday to win the CLC championship for the ninth year in a row.

The overall champion is determined by regular-season duals and Saturday’s meet, with a combined score for the outcome.

Tech won the overall season title with 15 points, followed by Alexandria with 12. Willmar and Sauk Rapids tied for third, Brainerd was fifth, Sartell sixth, St. Cloud Apollo seventh and Fergus Falls eighth.
