MARATHON: Brainerd Jaycees Run for the Lakes April 26-27 in Nisswa

The Brainerd Jaycees Run for the Lakes is scheduled the weekend of April 26-27 at Nisswa.

Race events include a kids fun run and 5-kilometer run and a health expo April 26 followed by the 10K, half, full, and relay marathon events April 27.

The sixth annual event is expected to draw more than 1,500 runners.

The weekend will start April 26 at the Grand View Lodge Gull Lake Center in Nisswa where racers can pick up their participant packet and visit the Health Expo, presented by Essentia Health, from 2 to 7 p.m.

The expo is open to the public. A number of vendors will be on site with health and wellness information, demonstrations, and product giveaways.

At 6 p.m. April 26, Nisswa Mayor Brian Lehman will make the weekend official by welcoming racers in downtown Nisswa. Races start with the kids 1K fun run at 6:15 p.m. followed by the 5K race at 6:30 p.m.

Marathon events start at 8 a.m. April 27, followed by the 10K at 8:15 a.m.

This year, all racers participating in a 5K distance or longer have the option of choosing women’s or men’s fit race shirts rather than the generic fit that has been offered in the past.

Postrace activities April 27 have been enhanced to include the 27th mile awards ceremony and celebration.

In its first five years, the Run for the Lakes events has raised and donated more than $20,000 to various non-profit causes. The main beneficiary of this year’s race will be the Power Packs program that benefits youths in area middle schools. Power Packs are bags that consist of 3-5 pounds of nutritious, non-perishable food products. The packs also include literature on nutrition, activities, and tips on how to develop healthy eating habits. The program is based on income guidelines and is free to families that wish to participate.
