Area Boys Basketball: Hornets capture state consolation championship

PLYMOUTH — Daniel Newton tallied 19 points, eight assists, and six rebounds to lead Lake Region past Woodcrest 50-40 in Saturday’s consolation championship game of the Minnesota Association of Christian Schools state tournament.

Newton captured first-team all-conference honors while Hayden Brooks, who pulled down six boards and tallied four points Saturday, received honorable mention.

Jake Christianson posted a career-high 16 points to go with six rebounds as the Hornet’s finished their season with a 12-12 record.

“I’m really proud of how our seniors played, they stepped up,” said Lake Region coach Mike Snow.

LITTLE FALLS — Collin Eckman hit 8 of 12 from the floor and 7-10 at the free throw line to tally 21 points as Little Falls beat Mora 72-63 in Saturday’s Granite Ridge Conference game.

Troy Scott collected 16 points while Jake Scott added 15 points. The Flyers netted 50 percent of their shots from the floor, 47 percent from the arc, and 71 percent at the foul line.

Mora beat Little Falls 63-61 at Mora on Jan. 18.

PIERZ — Cullin Carter collected 26 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and two steals to lead Pierz past Eden Valley-Watkins 63-59 in Saturday’s Central Minnesota Conference game.

Mitch Bednar added 16 points, 11 boards, and two steals while Ben Boser posted 15 points, two assists, and two steals for Pierz, which beat Eden Valley-Watkins 57-46 on Jan. 25.
