SWIMMING AND DIVING: Six Warriors advance to state in six events

ST. CLOUD — Brainerd won a relay, set a school record in another relay and will send six Warriors to the state meet following the Section 8-2A finals Saturday at St. Cloud Tech.

Luke Jacobsen, Joe Wells, Josh McKeag, David Supinski, Nick Goll and Justin Kuglin will represent Brainerd at the 2A state meet, which begins Friday at the University of Minnesota.

Brainerd finished third in the section with 325 points. Champion Maple Grove accumulated 490 and runner-up St. Michael-Albertville 434.

“It was just a fantastic meet for us,” Warriors coach John Zemke said. “We were thrilled with how fast everyone swam.

“We were happy how the kids performed. They swam like we expected them to. It was nice that every single person was able to drop the amount of time they did.”

The Warriors swam 33 lifetime bests and dropped 154.94 seconds from their seed times to their final times.

The 200 free relay of Kuglin, Supinski, McKeag and Jacobsen cruised to the championship with a time of 1:29.11. They dropped 1.95 seconds from Friday’s prelim time.

In the 400 free relay, Goll, Kuglin, Supinski and McKeag cranked out a school-record runner-up time of 3:13.83. The previous school record was set in 2009.

“That was in the full-body suit age,” Zemke said of the previous school record. “The next year times got slower.

“For our kids to go 3:13 is pretty fast. Averaging it out that’s about 48.4 per person. That’s moving along. 48.4 is probably the fourth-, fifth or sixth-fastest time in school history. And, three of those four guys are back next year.”

Qualifiers in individual events were McKeag, Kuglin and Wells.

McKeag was runner-up in the 100 butterfly at 53.91.

Kuglin was second in the 100 freestyle in 49.11.

Wells qualified for state by time standard with a third-place 1:00.86 in the 100 breaststroke. The state standard was 1:02.57.

The 200 medley relay of Jacobsen, Wells, McKeag and Supinski qualified for state by time standard as it went 1:38.86 in the finals, 57/100ths of a second faster than they went in the prelims, and finished third. The state standard was 1:41.88.

“These meets are exciting,” Zemke said. “For a lot of kids, it’s their state meet. A lot of kids never get to a state meet. This type of atmosphere is conducive to swimming fast. If you go the fastest you’ve ever gone, it’s a big thrill for us as coaches.”
