Women's Basketball: Six Raiders hold their own against division champion Northland

The Central Lakes College Raiders went up against the Northern Division champion Northland Pioneers with just six players in Saturday’s 77-58 Northern Division loss.

“We just got tired toward the end,” said Raiders coach Dennis Eastman. “I told them that I don’t like to lose but they showed a lot of heart out there.”

Lindsay Monson led four scorers with 33 points for the Raiders, who managed to maintain the same shooting percentage as Northland, but gave up 29 points on turnovers.

CLC, which had several players suffering from injuries, was outrebounded by Northland 72-65.

“They played through (the injuries),” said Eastman, “but it hampered them. I wanted them to prove to themselves that with only six players they can still compete and I was very proud of them the way they played.”

Carlie Sweet added 10 points for CLC, which finished fourth in the Northern Division and heads to face the Pioneers next weekend in the Region 13 tournament at Thief River Falls.

“We’re playing these guys in seven days,” said Eastman, “and we’ll have the other two players back and I think that can make a difference then. That’s something to say from where we started at 1-12.

“I was pleased with their effort tonight and they never gave up.”

Northland coach Shannon Nelson, whose team is ranked sixth in NJCAA Division III, said, “I think what we did was try to wear them out and we knew that they only had six players and one of our strengths is our transition game and our transition offense and we knew that if we ran for 40 minutes there was gonna be a point where they got tired and we got layups out of that.

“That was our focus. We knew that if we played the way we should, we would win, but having some of their players missing created size matchup problems for us.

“When they come to our place next weekend it’s going to be a battle because they’ll have the players back and the players who have gotten them this point. Lindsay Monson had a great game and created problems for us. This week we’ll be practicing our post and help defense because it needs to be better.”
