Alpine Skiing: Warrior girls ski to second

BIWABIK — Brainerd placed four girls in the top 15 and finished second in the Martin Luther King Sunset Slalom Saturday at Giants Ridge.

Brainerd was eight points behind Stillwater for first.

Alex Stone placed fourth, Hannah Moen ninth, Grace McGuire 11th and Ashley Fitterer 14th. Payge Fitterer, who was in place of a sick Jayden Lindner, finished 19th.

The Brained boys finished sixth.

“I was impressed with our boys to get our four top guys all to put down two clean runs like they did (Saturday),” said Warriors head coach Jim Ruttger. “I think it was a real accomplishment to be in the middle of that field.”

Brainerd had hoped to compete in both the morning and afternoon events, but bus troubles delayed the team’s arrival.

“When you get up at 4 a.m. to try to get to a race and not get in on the morning event was frustrating,” said Ruttger. “It’s a neat opportunity to ski against teams we rarely see. Stillwater is one of the top teams in the state so to be only eight points behind them felt really good. Even better is we were able to compete on the state meet venue. The girls did an outstanding job.”

Grant Kosobud led the Warrior boys with a 26th-place time of 1:27.70. Garett Lee finished 28th and Ben Thoele was 29th.
