Boys Hockey: Warriors rally for key win over Spuds

MOORHEAD — Trailing 2-0 after one period, the Brainerd Warriors rallied for four unanswered goals in the second and went on to defeat the Moorhead Spuds 5-3 in a Section 8-2A game Thursday night.


Cole Smith and Jacob Ellingson tallied four and three points, respectively, as Smith finished with a pair of goals and two assists while Ellingson contributed a goal and two assists.

Also scoring for Brainerd were Nate DeChaine and Issac Johnson. Logan Rivard collected a pair of assists.

Brainerd goalie Brady Mick made 33 saves. Moorhead outshot Brainerd by a combined 27-8 in the first and third periods, but the Warriors dominated the middle stanza, outgunning the Spuds 18-9.

The win improved the Warriors to 12-6-1 overall and avenged a 4-2 loss to the Spuds on Jan. 9.

Moorhead slipped to 9-10-1 overall.
