Area Golf News: Gopher fundraiser enters 14th season

What started 14 years ago, has turned into a summer highlight for many Golden Gopher fans.

The Gopher Golf Gathering hosted by Dutch Cragun is scheduled for June 26-27 at Cragun's Legacy Courses in East Gull Lake.

The annual fundraiser for University of Minnesota athletics was expanded four years ago to accommodate all former alumni and fans, especially those that do not golf.

The Thursday night coaches dinner is open to everyone. The cost is $25 and will begin with a 5:30 p.m. silent auction and social hour followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a coaches program to follow.

This year's event will feature Gopher athletic director Norwood Teague, Gopher men's golf coach John Carlson, football assistant coach Tracy Claeys and assistant men's basketball coaches Ben Johnson and Dan McHale.

"Anytime you're going to have the head of the athletic department you know it's a big deal," said Eric Peterson, director of golf at Cragun's. "We are also excited to have coaches from the basketball, football and golf teams attending this year."

New this season will be a U of M Athlete Reception from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Legacy Pavilion. This event will be open to only former Gopher athletes and a guest. There is no charge for this reception.

"It's our way to recognize former U of M athletes," said Peterson. "We wanted to reach out and encourage more former Gophers in our area to attend, so we're hosting a complimentary reception before the dinner."

Friday will be the four-player, 18-hole golf scramble on the Dutch Legacy course. Entry fee for the two-day event is $125 and includes the Thursday dinner, a brunch reception that begins at 8 a.m., golf, cart and prize opportunities. The golf event will begin with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.

"This is one of the most popular and rewarding golf events we're proud to host each year," said Cragun. "The tournament is for anybody who is interested in helping the U of M Golden Gopher Fund, whether you are a golfer or not. We offer the coaches dinner Thursday evening, which includes social hour, dinner, reception and silent auction. That is perfect for the golfer and non-golfer. All Gopher fans are welcome."

Cragun stressed to those interested that if they can't fill a foursome Cragun's golf staff will find playing partners for those interested in playing.
