Vikings release struggling Blair Walsh, sign Forbath
Walsh missed his fourth extra point of the season in Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Washington Redskins. The 26-year-old had already been under the gun by the Vikings, who worked out six kickers last Tuesday after Walsh misfired on an extra-point attempt and had a field goal blocked in a 22-16 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions on Nov. 6.
Kai Forbath, who was one of the six kickers who auditioned last week, is expected to sign with the Vikings later on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
Minnesota will need to restructure at least one contract to make cap room for Forbath, who made 88.1 percent of his field-goal attempts from 2012-14 with the Washington Redskins.
Forbath, 29, made 10 of 15 field-goal attempts with the Redskins and New Orleans Saints in 2015.
Walsh's struggles have followed since he missed wildly on a 27-yard game-winning attempt with 22 seconds remaining in a playoff loss to Seattle in January.
Walsh is 12 of 16 on field-goal attempts and 15 of 19 on extra-point tries for Minnesota (5-4), which has answered a five-game season-opening winning streak with four consecutive losses to find itself in a tie with Detroit (5-4) atop the NFC Central.
Walsh has made 133 of 158 field-goal attempts in parts of five seasons since being selected with a sixth-round pick of the 2012 draft.
