College Football: Raiders open playoffs at home Sunday vs. Vermilion
The Central Lakes College Raiders will host Vermilion Community College in the quarterfinals of the MCAC state tournament 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Findorff Athletic Complex in Brainerd.
CLC has limited all but one opponent to 20 points or less in seven of its eight regular-season games. The Raiders beat Vermilion 10-8 in a Week 3 game in the Eastern Division opener for both teams Sept. 16.
Raiders running back Nuke Crowell has rushed for 611 yards and six TDs. Quarterback Quentin Skinner has thrown for 668 yards and eight scores. Daryl Waindim and Teshawn Kelly are the leading receivers with 398 and 332 yards, respectively, and have combined to score five TDs. Kicker Antoine Akundu is 3-for-6 on field goals and 17 of 19 on extra-point kicks. Linebacker Arron Martin and lineman Brendon Loch each have registered 38 tackles.
The Ironmen beat Minnesota West in their regular-season finale to earn a playoff berth. Vermilion hopes to maintain the offensive form that posted 37 points on the Blue Jays.
Vermilion quarterback Breon Jackson has passed for 1,437 yards and 10 scores but has thrown 11 interceptions. Jackson Long leads the Ironmen in rushing with 480 yards and five TDs. Receivers Glenn Smith, DeReiko Meridy and Rasheed Cameron have combined to catch 89 passes for 1,339 yards and 13 scores. Linebacker Anthony Miranda is the leading tackler with 72.
CLC overcame an early season stumble against Mesabi Range to finish at the top of the Eastern Division. While CLC, Rochester and Mesabi all boasted identical 4-1 divisional records, the Raiders have a 3-0 mark in non-divisional play to thank for the No. 1 seed in the division.
Mesabi was the only MCAC squad to beat CLC but Rochester claims the second seed in the East on account of its 6-2 overall record compared to Mesabi's 5-3 mark.
