Spartans top Raiders 3-1

Melissa Widman pounded 14 kills and Carlie Sweet added 11 more, but the Central Lakes Raiders were unable to put away the Fergus Falls Spartans losing 3-1 in a non-division match Friday night at CLC.

The Raiders started slow losing the first game 25-17 before rebounding to win the second 25-18. The Spartans took the final two 25-21 and 25-23.

“The slow start hurt us,” said Raider coach Jane Peterson.  “We played with a new lineup that we didn’t practice with — it might not be a smart thing for a coach to do, but we wanted to try something new.”

Abby Knutson put up 34 set assists while Emily Weber served a pair of aces to go with seven kills and a block. Sweet put back three blocks and Hayley Hornick led with 12 digs.

“The good thing is we were much improved from Wednesday night,” Peterson said. “Our serving was much better tonight. It seems kind of unfair that we played better and lost after winning Wednesday.”

“Every game, some people are getting better and that’s encouraging,” she added.
