Archibald earns U.S. Junior Camp Invite
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of Nebraska-Omaha freshman forward Josh Archibald of Brainerd is one of 29 players on the preliminary roster for the 2012 U.S. National Junior Team.
UNO head coach Dean Blais will be head coach of the team for the second time in three years.
Archibald ranks second in freshman scoring for UNO with seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 18 games. He is fifth overall in team scoring and has a plus/minus rating of plus-4, second-best on the team. Archibald was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week following a four-point weekend at Bemidji State on Nov. 11-2.
Players will go to camp Dec. 17 in Camrose, Alberta. Final roster for the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship is expected to be named Dec. 22. The camp will include exhibition games against Russia on Dec. 20, Switzerland on Dec. 21 and Slovakia on Dec. 23.
The Americans are lseeking their third straight medal in the tournament. Blais led the U.S. to its second-ever gold medal in 2010 with a stunning 6-5 overtime win over tournament favorite Canada in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Last year, the U.S. took home a bronze while hosting the tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.
Eight members of last year’s team have been invited to this year’s camp, including current WCHA standouts Justin Faulk of Minnesota-Duluth, Derek Forbort of North Dakota, Nick Bjugstad of Minnesota and Jason Zucker of Denver.
