Second quarter key for CLC in 18-9 win over Itasca

GRAND RAPIDS — Beau Bellmore rushed for a score, and Andrew Johnson threw for two more, all in the second quarter, as the Central Lakes College Raiders won their second game in a row with an 18-9 win against the Itasca Community College Vikings.

With the win, the Raiders moved their overall record to 2-1, while the Vikings slipped to 0-3.

Itasca’s Preston Hurd hit a field goal from 26 yards for the only first-quarter scoring.

The second quarter was all Raiders as Johnson opened the scoring with a 40-yard TD strike to Anthony Shelman. Matthew Scott was on the receiving end of Johnson’s next pass as they connected on a 63-yard scoring play.

Bellmore, who had another big rushing day with 127 yards on 28 carries, scored from four yards out and CLC finished the half with an 18-3 lead.

Itasca received a fourth-quarter touchdown run of five yards from Gerard Graves for the final score.

The Raiders’ defense was dominating again as Itasca rushed for just 28 yards on 34 carries and finished with only 180 total yards.

Along with Bellmore’s strong performance, Johnson had a big passing day as he finished 14 of 29 for 266 yards and one interception.

Shellman led the CLC receiving core with five catches for 106 yards, Scott added two catches for 71 and Paul Lake totaled 70 yards on five catches.

CLC moves into Southern Division play next Saturday at Findorf Athletic Complex when they host archrival Rochester.

“It was good to get another win and improve our record to 2-1,” Raiders coach Greg Medeck said. “The game turned out to be quite sloppy and lacked the execution we were looking for. I thought Itasca played very inspired football and challenged us all day.

“We will certainly have to play better in the coming weeks to compete in the extremely strong Southern Division. Southern Division play begins (next) weekend at home against Rochester.”
