College Baseball: Johnson earns Big East honor

Staples-Motley High School graduate Gunner Johnson was named to the All-Big East second team in baseball May 19.

The Butler University left-hander ended his senior campaign with a 3-5 overall record that included a 3.88 ERA. Two of this three wins came against Big East opponents, with one of the best outings of his career coming against Seton Hall when he won a head-to-head matchup with pitcher of the year Josh Prevost.

Butler took the first game of the Seton Hall series with Johnson shutting out the Pirates in seven innings. He allowed six hits with seven strikeouts and only two walks. Johnson earned Big East Player of the Week honors after helping BU defeat Seton Hall.

In his second Big East win of the year, Johnson shut down Xavier in eight innings. Xavier collected seven hits, but was unable to score against Johnson who led BU to an 8-0 win. He struck out four and only walked one as he picked up his third overall win.

Johnson ended the year by taking the opening day role in each series. His role grew throughout the season as six of his eight starts came during the conference season.

Johnson’s first action in 2014 came in a single inning of relief at Samford on Feb. 28. His first win came in a 4-inning outing vs. IPFW on March 8 and his first start of the season followed at Mercer on March 12.

The Motley, Minn., native tossed 58 innings this season with 47 strikeouts, the third-highest total on the team. Twenty-five of the 29 runs he allowed were earned as he limited the opposition to a .256 batting average.

Johnson limited his walk count to 19 and only recorded four wild pitches. He only surrendered one home run while reaching a pitch count over 80 in eight games.
