Patrick Riewer named to academic team

GRAND FORKS, N.D.— University of North Dakota senior outfielder/pitcher Patrick Riewer has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Riewer, a 4.0 student majoring in chemical engineering, reached base in nine of 10 plate appearances in a three-game sweep against Northern Colorado in March. Since that weekend, he raised his batting average 119 points and slugged his first homer in a UND uniform, a two-run shot April 6 at TD Ameritade Park at Creighton University.

On April 29, he made his first start on the mound in a UND uniform. After throwing three combined innings all season out of the bullpen, the right-hander went the distance in a 4-3 win at North Dakota State, striking out six and did not allow a run past the third inning. It was North Dakota’s first win in Fargo since the 2004 season.
