What's Up Outdoors: Make the most with what you have
Sometimes we have bumps in the road that we cannot avoid. They may set you back but don't let them stop you.
We arrived in Montana a little later than planned, so we need to make the most of the little time we had before the mule deer season ended. Being no one likes to eat their tags, the plan was to not attempt a one-day trophy hunt and to shoot the first decent deer I saw. This would be about having meat in the freezer to remember the season, not antlers for the wall. That would have to wait to next year.
So the hunt went way quicker than planned—actually the truck was headed back to Minnesota within hours after getting there. Right after first light this 3-by-3 gave me an opportunity for a nice 250-yard shot, so I decided that this would be a great deer to fill my 2017 tag.
The big game season for me is almost over but hopefully with the cold coming next week I will still have my chance on a whitetail to finish the year.
As far as ice fishing right now, all I can say is don't. But if you want to come down to the St. Paul ice show and check out all the new products, and talk a little fishing, that's where I'll be.
