What's Up Outdoors: It's nice on the ice

Tammy and Carla, ready to hit the ice.

I do not think I've ever spent so much time on the ice without putting a line in the water as last week.

Last Saturday my wife Tammy and her tournament partner Carla Bahr competed in the Women Only Ice Fishing Tournament hosted by Women Anglers of Minnesota, which took place on Gull Lake. It would be the first time they fished together and it would turn out they would make a pretty good team. With a very tough bite they spent the day trying new spots and looking for bigger fish.

With the tournament being held on a spot that has poor fishing this time of year and being held in the middle of the day, I was just hoping they caught something. But as the day would unfold they held their own and finished fifth out of 75 teams of women anglers. All their hard work paid off and I cannot express how proud I am of Tammy and Carla, who I am now calling " The Dynamic Duo." Great job ladies!

The next day was the Brainerd Warriors ice fishing day on Rice Lake. Around 40 members of the fishing team came out to catch some fish and have some fun on the ice. Everyone caught some fish and went home with some great prizes thanks to Rapala, Striker Ice and Northland Tackle. I am very excited to see everyone from the fishing team have another great summer, but no matter what the season brings, I know we will be having some fun on the water.

And last but not least, Wednesday we hit the ice with 80 fourth-graders from Garfield Elementary. We started the day talking about everything fishing for a few hours at the school, then it was off to the lake to get some hands-on ice fishing. The bite was kind of slow but anytime you get kids on the ice they usually find a way to have fun. To sum up the day, a few fish and a lot of laughs.
