AMATEUR BASEBALL: Nisswa advances to final eight
HUTCHINSON — Nisswa rode a six-run second inning and held on for a 6-5 win over the Ada Athletics in the second round of the Class C state tournament Friday night.
Drew Boland went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Jason Roepke had two hits for the Lightning.
Brett Kramer, draftee from Fort Ripley, picked up his second win of the tournament. In 5.2 innings he allowed five hits and four runs (2 earned), walked six and struck out five.
Luke Schumer pitched 3.1 innings to notch a save. He allowed one run (earned) with one walk and one strikeout.
The Lightning play Fairmont at 11 a.m. Sunday at Brownton in the opening round of double elimination. Eight teams will remain after Saturday’s games.
Nisswa (21-7-1) is guaranteed a game Sept. 2 at either 5 or 7:30 p.m. depending on the outcome of its game Sunday.
After Ada scored once in the top of the second, the Lightning scored six times. Brett Jenkins drew a bases-loaded walked to force in the first run.
Boland then crushed a 3-run double to right-center. With two out, Roepke ripped an RBI double to left-center and Adam Hardy added a run-scoring single to left.
Ada pulled within 6-3 in the fifth and 6-4 in the sixth. Schumer relieved Kramer with two out in the sixth and the bases loaded and got a flyout to center to end the threat.
The Athletics scored in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly before Schumer struck out Evan Massmann top end the game.
Nisswa's defense turned four inning-ending double plays.
