SEMIPRO FOOTBALL: Lumberjacks rally for preseason victory
MINOT, N.D. — Jackson Illies threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ra Ra Jones midway through the fourth quarter to give the Brainerd Lumberjacks an 18-13 win over the Minot Maulers in a Midwest Premier Football League preseason game Sunday.
Keyante Johnson scored twice for the Lumberjacks. Johnson caught a 65-yard pass from Illies in the first quarter and returned an interception for a score in the third.
“We didn’t travel with a full team because of the distance and the game being on a Sunday,” Lumberjacks coach J.J. Kern said. “We only had 26 guys so we got a look at a lot of guys. Our offense looked good. We were barely missing on some plays. We’re very excited and ready for regular-season play.”
Minot tied the score 6-6 in the second quarter after Brainerd muffed a punt. The Maulers went up 13-12 as they scored in the fourth.
Titus Cole led Brainerd in tackles with eight and Leopold Ashley added two sacks.
Dennis Taute and Wade Steier led the Lumberjacks in rushing with 52 and 45 yards, respectively.
Brainerd plays at the Twin Cities Titans at 4 p.m. Saturday.
