Semi-Pro Football: Lumberjacks stumble in season opener

IRONDALE — Wade Steier rushed for 60 yards, threw for 70 more and retuned an interception for a touchdown for the Brainerd Lumberjacks in their season-opening 42-7 loss to the Twin Cities Titans Saturday.

Steier’s offensive stats all came in the second half, after he filled in for starting quarterback Jackson Illies.

Lumberjacks head coach JJ Kern said the switch was to give both Illies and Steier an opportunity.

Eric Johnson and Titus Cole shined on defense for the Lumberjacks, each recorded a team-leading seven tackles.

Running back Dennis Taute gained 70 yards and Ra Ra Jones led the team with 65 receiving yards.

“Every game after we get blown out, we pick it up next week” said Kern. “They played very well, but a lot of our stuff was self-inflicted.”

The Lumberjacks will face the St. Cloud Renegades Saturday, May 19 at St. Cloud State University.
