SemiPro Football: Lumberjacks air it out against Renegades

Lumberjacks air it out vs. Renegades

COLLEGEVILLE — The combination of Jackson Illies and Ra Ra Jones worked for two touchdowns in the Brainerd Lumberjacks 27-12 victory over the Granite City Renegades Saturday.

Ellis hit Jones on a 34-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and the Lumberjacks claimed a 13-0 halftime lead thanks to Gyangelo Bradden’s 65-yard interception return for a touchdown.

After a Renegades score opened the second half, Illies hit Keyante Johnson on an 18-yard pass and finished the scoring with a 74-yard strike to Jones.

Dennis Taute rushed for 62 yards to lead Brainerd’s ground attack.

“Those were really hard-earned yards,” said Lumberjacks head coach J.J. Kern. “They really stacked the box. Their strength was in their front seven. We just missed on a few long balls for big scores. Our team is scattered throughout the state so we’ve only had three practices, plus we don’t have the facility to practice year round like the city teams do. Our timing is just a little off, but that’s exciting because we’re that close to really breaking the top off the scoreboard.”

The Lumberjacks will take Memorial Day weekend off before traveling to Burnsville to face the Twin Cities Rhinos.

League: Brd 1-1. Overall: Brd 2-1. Next: Brainerd vs. Twin Cities Rhinos at Burnsville June 2.
