Girls Swimming and Diving: Warriors qualify 5 individuals for state

ST. CLOUD—Brainerd's 200 free relay and Warrior diver Cami Harmer qualified for the Class 2A state meet following their finishes in the Section 8-2A finals Saturday at St. Cloud Tech.

Jamie Wallace, Jacquilyn Rude, Katie Streiff and Madelynn Gibbons teamed up to finish second in the relay. Harmer finished fourth in diving to also advance.

Wallace, Rude, Streiff and Gibbons were clocked at 1:39.98. They finished behind only St. Michael-Albertville which splashed to a 1:39.91.

"Our 200 free relay had not gone faster than 1:45 all season," Warriors head coach Dan Anderson said. "They really put it together, dropping six seconds. They all swam great splits and really surprised everybody but themselves.

"Jamie got the team out to a great start and Jacqui and Katie had great swims to put us in a two-team battle for the section title with STMA. Maddie swam a great anchor leg. In the end, we lost the race by 7/100ths of a second. We qualified by placing second but we did also make state cuts by half a second.

"I am really proud of all of these girls. It looks like we will have to go a bit faster at state as we are seeded 18th."

Harmer accumulated 364.70 points to finish fourth.

"Cami dove great," Anderson said. "She had 11 solid dives. Most of the girls in the competition had at least one poor dive. Cami did not. She was solid all day. She really is a gamer.

"This is her third trip to state. She has a great chance to make the top 16 this year."

Brainerd finished sixth in the final team standings with 252 points.

"As a team, we really competed well this past weekend," Anderson said. "Everybody stepped up and raced well. I couldn't be prouder of these girls."
