State Diving: Warriors Whiteman just misses

Tim Whiteman

MINNEAPOLIS—Tim Whiteman made it through one cut, but was one point away from making the second cut Thursday in the Class 2A state diving prelims at the University of Minnesota.

The Brainerd Warriors senior advanced through the five-dive preliminary round with 154.4 points.

He finished with 235.2 points after the three-dive semifinals to place 18th. The top 16 advanced to Saturday's finals. Stillwater's Josiah Fick finished 16th with 236.45 points.

"We had it going good," said Warriors diving coach Owen Trout. "He left some points out there. He's disappointed because he had some goals set to make the finals. We knew he could make it into that top 16, but it just didn't happen tonight."

Trout said it wasn't one dive, but a combination of small things in each dive that prevented Whiteman from collecting enough points.

"It was a well judged meet," Trout said. "We switched his lineup around from the section meet and every dive we felt like left some points. He had a terrific practice (Wednesday) and he was so ready and rode the board nice, but it was just small little things that if we would have cleaned up he would have been in the to 10."

While disappointed himself, Trout said the worst part is Whiteman is a senior and he won't get to coach him next season.
