ST. PAUL—Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale senior Sam Moore repeated as champion in shot put and Max Giza from Staples-Motley won pole vault during finals in the Class 1A state meet Friday at Hamline University.

Moore tossed the shot 62-3.50 surpassing his winning throw of 59-11.75 last year.

Giza, also a senior, finally stood at the top of the podium in boys pole vault clearing 14-6 after finishing third last year (14-3) and seventh in 2016 (13-9).

The top nine finishers in each final event stand on the podium.

In boys triple jump finals, Pequot Lakes senior Reid Pierzinski finished seventh and Pierz sophomore Matthias Algarin also made the podium placing eighth.

Three area girls reached the podium in each of the high jump and discus finals.

Derera Engholm (Pequot Lakes) was fourth in the discus (124-11) followed by Beth-el Algarin (Pierz) in sixth (122-9) and Ellie Miron (Wadena-Deer Creek) ninth (116-4).

In girls high jump finals, Julia Johnson (Pillager) tied for fifth while Chelsie Kurtz (Pierz) and Britt Kratochvil (PL) tied for eighth, all with jumps of 5-2.

Preliminaries were also held Friday in several running events. The top two in each heat and the next five best times advance to Saturday's finals.

Pierzinski took a major stride forward in defending his titles in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles as he turned in the fastest prelim time in both. He also moved up from fifth to first in the 200 dash.

Giza is sitting second behind Pierzinski 16/100ths of a second in the 110 hurdles and is seventh in the 300 hurdles.

BHV's Brett Jansen is in seventh heading into the 400 dash finals.

The W-DC Wolverines have three relays moving on to Saturday's finals. Last year the Wolverines were second in the 4x200 and this year's relay (Jonathan Pantages, Bereket Loer, Chase Domier, Hunter Hawkins) is first following preliminaries. The same four runners have the W-DC 4x400 in second and Pantages, Loer and Domier join Isaac Hale on the 4x100 which is third.

The Pierz 4x100 (Matthias Algarin, Benjamin Herold, Carter Moulzolf, Alex Gross) made the cut to the finals and sits ninth.

Pequot Lakes girls are poised to defend their titles in the 4x400 and 4x200 relays. The 4x400 (Grace McGuire, Kristin Skog, Lydia Hubbard, Cassidy Chaney) is in first place following the prelims. The 4x200 (Mirjana Ganley, Skog, Chaney, McGuire) is in second, six-tenths of a second behind Grand Meadow.

Area girls advancing in individual events are McGuire, sixth in the 400 dash, and W-DC eighth-grader Mikaela Malone, eighth in the 100 dash.

Field event finals will also be held Saturday in boys high and long jumps and discus along with girls triple jump, pole vault and shot put.
