Class 3A/2A State Wrestling: Flyers' Bryce finishes sixth at 152
Little Falls' seventh-seeded Simon Bryce, a senior transfer from Foley, wrapped up his high school career by finishing sixth in the Class 3A individual state tournament Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Ninth-ranked Jimmy Brown (Cambridge-Isanti) outpointed Bryce 5-2 in the 152-pound match for fifth place.
"This was his first state appearance and first year wrestling for us," said Little Falls head coach Mike Hendrickson. Bryce won his opening-round match Friday by technical fall before losing 8-6 to No. 4 Willie Bastyr (Lakeview South) in the quarterfinals.
"That match was an exciting back and forth match, really intense," said Hendrickson. "Bastyr wound up getting a takedown right at the buzzer for a two-point win."
In the consolation quarterfinals, Bryce scored an escape to edge 10th-seeded Chance Hinrichs (Bemidji) 1-0 and then lost 6-0 to Albert Lea's sixth-ranked Brody Nielsen in the consolation semis.
"The match with Hinrichs was a rubber match," said Hendrickson. "Earlier in the season Bryce beat him pretty handily, but then Hinrichs came back and beat Bryce for the section (8-3A) title.
"He had a great tournament and having him come into our program was awesome. He has great technique and got along well with our kids. A real nice kid and pretty solid wrestler." Bryce finishes 43-8 for the season and with 127 career wins.
Huls, Andres eliminated
The Pierz Pioneers were wrestling for the first time in Class 2A and had two individuals reach the consolation quarterfinals before bowing out Saturday.
Carson Huls went 2-2 at 220 pounds in 2A. The unranked junior was edged in the consolation quarterfinals when No. 10 Kaleb Hasses (Redwood-River Valley) scored the match's only point on an escape for a 1-0 decision. Huls finishes 37-10.
Huls' seventh-ranked teammate, junior Jake Andres, also lost in the consolation quarterfinals at 120 pounds via an 11-3 major decision to Robby Horsman (Kasson-Mantorville). Andres was the Section 8-2A champion and finishes 43-7.
