Luck of the draw: Allen pulls out the win in Manhattan Beach

Wrestling: Zillmer advances with win in finals

ROCHESTER, Minn.—Hayden Zillmer dispatched Deron Winn 8-2 and 9-7 to win the best-of-three finals Sunday in the World Team Trials.

The two victories advance Zillmer, a Crosby-Ironton High School graduate, to the Final X tournament June 23 in Bethlehem, Penn. He will wrestle J'den Cox, the reigning Olympic bronze medalist for the United States. Winners earn spots on the U.S. Senior World Team and compete in the 2018 World Wrestling Championships Oct. 20-28 at Budapest, Hungary.

In Rochester, Zillmer wrestled his way to an 8-2 win in the first bout. It was the second bout that Zillmer brought the fireworks.

Trailing 7-3 with less than 90 seconds remaining in the second and final period, Zillmer used back-to-back step-out points to cut the score to 7-5. Then, with 39 seconds to go, he powered through for a takedown and subsequently a turn to take a 9-7 lead. He drained the clock and obtained the right to appear at Final X.
