NEW YEAR, 2 NEW BABIES - part 2
Kody Michael Dause
Kody Michael Dause wasn't supposed to be born for another three weeks or so, but the Brainerd baby boy had New Year's Day plans of his own.

Kody was born at 2:59 p.m. Tuesday, New Year's Day, at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby to his parents, Lena Youngberg and Shawn Dause, becoming the first baby born at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby in 2008. He was the second baby born in Crow Wing County in 2008.

The dark-haired, blue-eyed baby boy, who weighed in at 6 pounds, 13.5 ounces, and was 18 inches long, surprised everybody, said his mom, Lena.

"It kind of shocked everybody, but it's OK," said Youngberg. "He just kind of made his appearance today and said I'm coming out."

Youngberg and Dause were celebrating Monday night with a quiet game of Monopoly at their Brainerd home when she went into labor. Around 4 a.m. New Year's Day the contractions grew strong, but it wasn't for another 11 grueling hours that Kody was born. Nearly two hours after Kody's birth, his exhausted mom hadn't gotten any sleep all night - or all day.

"I'm very, very excited," said Lena, of Kody's birth. "I'm sleep-deprived, but very, very excited. He's as cute as a button but you know I would say that, I am the mom."

His proud older siblings include his 5-year-old sister, Evengline, and 3-year-old brother, Daniel. Kody's grandparents are Connie and Marlin Schmidt of Fort Ripley and Karrie Dause of Grey Eagle and Craig Dause of Staples.

Lena said Shawn and her mom, Connie, were in the delivery room when Kody was born while her dad, Marlin, was in the waiting room with her two older children. Evengline and Daniel were excited to meet their new baby brother soon after he was born, she said.

"They just think he's the cutest thing ever," said Lena. "They thought he was as cute as a bug."

Kody was the only baby born at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center on New Year's Day.
