Officer who lost eye in standoff goes home
Crosby-Ironton graduate 'in good spirits and looking forward to a speedy recovery'
MANKATO (AP) - The police officer who lost his right eye in a shooting near Amboy a few days before Christmas is recovering at home after being released from the hospital.

Officer Robert Sadusky, "is in good spirits and looking forward to a speedy recovery," Mankato police supervisor Matt Westermayer said Wednesday. He said Sadusky, a 7 1/2-year veteran of the department, "faces numerous additional procedures to continue to repair his face" but is resting and doing well.

Sadusky, 37, a Crosby-Ironton graduate, was released from St. Marys Hospital in Rochester on Friday, five days after the Dec. 23 standoff, in which he was shot in the face while responding with about 50 other officers to a reported disturbance at the home of Jeffrey Skjervold about a mile west of Amboy.

Sadusky was one of two members of the River Valley Tactical Response Team who went into the home to confront Skjervold.

Skjervold also shot Chris Nelson, 44, a St. Peter police officer and member of the tactical team, before taking his own life, authorities said. Nelson's ballistic helmet apparently protected him from serious injury, they said.

"He's doing better," said a woman who answered the phone on Wednesday at Nelson's residence in Le Sueur.

Skjervold's wife, Cindy, was able to get out of the house uninjured, authorities said.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continues to investigate the case, said Lt. Mark Peterson of the State Patrol. Edited transcripts of the 911 call could be released later this week, he said.

About 30 weapons were removed from the home after the shootings, which followed a seven-hour standoff between Skjervold, 41, and police.

Westermayer said he visited Sadusky, a former resource officer at Mankato schools, at his home. The loss of an eye doesn't necessarily mean Sadusky can't return to full police duty, Westermayer said.

The community "has been very supportive," Westermayer said, sending cards to the department and Sadusky and contributing to a fund established to help with medical expenses.
