Chamber to discuss transportation issues
The Brainerd Lakes Chamber Brainerd/Baxter Business Council invites members to attend an update meeting on transportation and infrastructure for 2008 from 7:30-9 a.m. Jan. 22 at the Northland Arboretum, 14250 Conservation Drive, Baxter.

The purpose of the meeting is to share information on transportation and other infrastructure improvements in Baxter, Brainerd and Crow Wing County that are scheduled for 2008 and in the future.

An overview of the chamber's Regional Planning Transportation Work Team report will be presented as well as general discussion about transportation challenges and opportunities.

Foundation seeks work for VISTA volunteers

The Initiative Foundation of Little Falls is seeking nonprofits and agencies that wish to expand their anti-poverty work with the help of a full-time, yearlong Volunteer in Service to America volunteer.

In partnership with AmeriCorps VISTA, the foundation will place up to 20 full-time VISTAs in organizations serving Benton, Cass, Crow Wing, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pine, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Wadena or Wright counties.

Eligible agencies include nonprofits, schools and government agencies.

Initial inquiries are due by Feb. 8. Selected sites will be invited to submit a full application and final site selections will be made by March 7. The following projects will be given highest consideration:

¥ Initiative Foundation program partners directly responding to poverty issues.

¥ Financial literacy and job-training programs.

¥ Faith-based initiatives using volunteers.

¥ Efforts to increase civic engagement among recent immigrants.

Agencies interview and select their own AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers from a pool of local and national candidates. Selected volunteers receive training, medical coverage and a monthly living allowance of $865. VISTA also provides a $4,725 education award or $1,200 cash stipend upon successful completion of a member's service year.

Group for Obama to meet Tuesday

Brainerd Lakes Area Obama for President will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center large meeting room.

In attendance will be two college-age campaign staff workers, John Sylvester, 8th Congressional District coordinator and a new Brainerd lakes area coordinator previously deployed in Iowa.

Also expected are local volunteers, a number are already actively organizing supporters in Crow Wing and Cass County precincts. This meeting is open to all interested in the candidacy of Sen. Barack Obama. Students who will be 18 by November are eligible and welcome.

The Brainerd senior center is at 803 Kingwood St.

Howell Movement. Clif Johnson and Ann Richardson, 28.5; and Joe Heal and Mark Anderson, 25.5. Duplicate bridge is played at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center in Brainerd.
