Crow Wing County sends 20 absentee ballots to recount
The Crow Wing County auditor's office sent 20 absentee ballots it considered wrongly rejected from the general election to the state Canvassing Board for the recount between Sen. Norm Coleman and DFLer Al Franken.
Stella Hegg, deputy auditor for elections, said some of the absentee ballots were rejected because election judges did not find a needed signature, but the signatures were found farther down on the ballot. In some instances election judges did not think the signatures matched, but when ballots were reconsidered the signatures were accepted and earlier differences were actually between printed and written names, not different individuals.
Two absentee ballots were accepted and then placed into the wrong envelope and were not counted on Election Day. Hegg said steps have already been taken to keep that from happening in the future. Crow Wing County mailed about 6,000 absentee ballots and about 4,000 were returned with 20 of those found wrongly rejected.
Hegg said it is unknown which candidate received the votes as the ballots were still sealed when sent to the Canvassing Board for the recount.
