Completely random slice of pop culture
Entertainment Editor The premiere date for the seventh season of "24" has been postponed indefinitely due to the writers' strike and the fact that Jack Bauer actor Kiefer Sutherland is in jail. It's frustrating because I think we all - fans and showmakers alike - want to erase the sour taste of Season 6.
Making the delay easier to bear are the "24 Declassified" paperbacks. Seven have been released so far, and all are crackerjack rides, but the three best are by John Whitman - "Veto Power," "Cat's Claw" and "Chaos Theory." The characters are primarily from the original cast, but new faces like Season 5's Chris Henderson occasionally pop up.
Writing a "24" novel is different from writing a "24" season - not every second is accounted for, because that would be tedious to read. Whitman - who would be a great addition to the show's staff - nonetheless writes page-turners, keeping the action and intrigue going. For example, "Chaos Theory" begins with Jack breaking out of prison, and you just have to read on for the explanation.
Check out these books and the clock counting down to Season 7 will tick a little faster.
