Warrior wrestlers keep conference title hopes alive

By JEREMY MILLSOP

With visions of conference titles dancing in its head the Brainerd Warriors wrestling team did what it needed to do Thursday.

The Warriors, 4-1 in the Central Lakes Conference, have hopes of sharing the conference title if not winning it outright thanks to a Little Falls Flyers upset over St. Cloud Tech Thursday.

To make those dreams reality, the Warriors need to beat all the remaining conference opponents on their schedule.

First up was the Sartell Sabres at the Brainerd High School.

One down. Three to go.

The Warriors flattened the Sabres 72-6. Three straight pins from seniors Greg Strand (145 pounds), Mike Wachsmuth (152) and Adam Hahnert (160) to seal the decision.

The Warriors finished with seven pins, four forfeits and two decisions in their most dominating performance of the season.

"Our goal going into the match wasn't about winning or losing against Sartell, it was about trying to improve," said Brainerd coach Bob Brakke. "We wanted our kids to keep working on their stuff and keep pushing the whole match.

The stat: The Warriors had seven pins.

Next: at St. Croix Falls Invitational, Saturday

"I think they did that pretty well. Sartell has some decent kids, but they just didn't match up very well against us."

Strand's pin came in 3:43 after the senior built a 5-0 lead. The win moved his season record to 16-8.

"I knew he was a ninth-grader so I just wanted to go hard and get as many takedowns as I could," said Strand, who bumped up from 140 to 145. "I wanted to go as aggressive as I could and bring it too him. I wanted to hammer down on his head as hard as I could. Just try to bring him down. Just try to get him scared because we had that edge on them."

Wachsmuth pinned his opponent at 3:10 followed by Hahnert's pin at 3:40. Nick Loreno (112) recorded a pin in 3:32. Tom Zelinske's (125) pin happened at 1:43 and Nate Rubin (130) pinned TJ Stang at the 3:41 mark. Grant Jaeche (189) ended the pinfest at 2:37.

"Obviously, Sartell has a lot of holes, but you always want to beat somebody as much as you can," said Strand. "That looks good later around section time.

"Next week we have Tech and that's a huge match for us. We should have beat Tech at the Kiffmeyer Duals (Jan. 10) but we ended up losing at the end. We were up by 20 and they came back, but I know we can beat them. That's going to be our biggest match."

The last time Brainerd won or tied for the conference title was 1994-95 when it tied with St. Cloud Tech and Rocori. If Brainerd continues its winning ways with a victory over the Tech Tigers Jan. 22 it could grab a share of the conference title with Rocori. Should Brainerd beat Tech and Tech beat Rocori Feb. 10, Brainerd would win the conference outright.
