Benefit and spaghetti dinner for Troy Welliver
There will be a benefit and spaghetti dinner for Troy Welliver from 3-6 p.m. Jan. 27 at the VFW Post No. 1647 in Brainerd. Cost: $8 for adults; $4 for children. There will be live music and a raffle drawing during the benefit.

The results of his medical problems have left him paralyzed on the right side and unable to walk. He is doing well at home and is undergoing physical and occupational therapy.

No mail delivery scheduled Monday

The Brainerd Post Office will operate on a holiday schedule Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Postmaster David Fuchs in a news release said regular residential and business deliveries will not be made Monday and usual post office lobby services will not be available, with the exception of post office lock box service.

Mail pickup from collection boxes also will be on a holiday schedule.

Fuchs said mailing services will not be available Monday at the Baxter branch station, located at the Triangle Store in Baxter.

Two installed as Shriners' officers

Two Brainerd area Shriners were installed as officers in Aad Shrine in Duluth on Jan. 12.

Richard Stebbins, Garrison, was elected Chief Rabban of the regional headquarters of the international organization. Glenn Brown, Brainerd, was elected president of the Brainerd area Aadzuhman Shrine club, one of 33 clubs throughout the Upper Midwest.

James Fisher, Duluth, was elected Potentate (President) of the 1,400-member branch at ceremonies in the organization's new facilities in Hermantown.

The slate of officers of the local Aadzuhman Shrine Club elected for the 2008 term are: Brown, president; Lyman Whitney, Brainerd, vice president; Don Crust, Brainerd, secretary-treasurer; Ron Burnard, Brainerd, past president; and Iver Johnson, Nisswa, Sander Erickson, Brainerd, and Ken Klapmeier, Pequot Lakes, as directors.

The 200-member Aadzuhman Shrine Club conducts a year-long funding campaign for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Nearly 100 children from the Brainerd area are getting free care at the Twin Cities unit at this time. Club members find kids with orthopedic or other such problems, help them apply for care and provide transportation for their appointments.

Individuals and businesses in 13 communities surrounding Brainerd are contacted for contributions each year. Crust estimates local members contributed more than 1,500 hours of volunteer time last year and have generated more than $1.2 million Shriners hospitals in the last 15 years.

Aadzuhman Shrine Club meets the first Monday of the month for lunch at its clubrooms in the basement of the Masonic Building on Sixth and Front streets in Brainerd.
