WINNER Piehl's persistence pays Outdoors Editor Most anglers would try a new tactic if what they used for six years never caught a fish.
Not Tim Piehl. The Baxter man's persistence paid off big time at the 17th annual Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza.
Ever since he first fished in the contest six years ago Piehl has found a hole in about 15 feet of water and dropped down a jig and shiner minnow. That game plan never worked until Saturday, when at 1:10 p.m. Piehl's bobber went down.
"I tried to feed it line but it was frozen, so I just set the hook," said Piehl, who moved to Baxter from Arlington, S.D. 10 years ago. "And then the hole was frozen in, so I didn't have a whole lot of room to get it through."
Piehl successfully landed the fish, a 4.91-pound northern pike, and when the gun sounded at 3 p.m. it was good for the keys to a new Ford F-150 pickup.

"When I caught it," Piehl said, "people around me were saying, 'Hey, that's the winning fish,' but I didn't think so. I told the guys from Ice Armor that if they put me in a new suit and I'd do a promotion for them, but they didn't take me up on it."
Piehl's was the third northern to win the contest. In 1997 Matthew Penner of Winnipeg won with a 13.34-pound pike and in 2002 Tracy Smith of New York Mills won with a 9.32-pound pike.
This year's second-place fish was a 3.50-pound walleye caught by Jeremy Olmscheid of St. Cloud. Two tullibees and another northern pike made up the top five. The 150 biggest fish were good for a prize. The 150th place fish was a 0.58-ounce perch caught by Shawn Wunderlich of Grey Eagle. He won an Ice Armor fishing suit. The coveted 100th place and its $10,000 cash award went to Brian O'Neil of Waconia.
"I wish my father could have been here," Piehl said after the contest. "He's the one who first brought me here six years ago. He'll be the first person I call tonight."
Piehl's father lives in Watertown, S.D.
Saturday's high temperature reached 28 degrees, but a brisk south wind had every contestant facing north by the end of the day. The Jaycees estimated Saturday that more than 10,000 people competed in the contest. Official attendance will be announced today.
"I really want to thank the Jaycees," Piehl said. "This is a fantastic, unbelievable event. I had to call all my family with the news. They can't believe it."
