Deadline fast approaching for Crow Wing County recipes
Does your cooking cut the mustard? Want to see your recipe included in a statewide cookbook celebrating Minnesota's statehood?
In honor of Minnesota's sesquicentennial in 2008, a special cookbook featuring recipes from each Minnesota county is being produced. The Brainerd Lakes Chamber and Chef and Company are sponsoring a recipe contest to select up to four recipes that reflect the culinary, cultural and product specialties of Crow Wing County.
The sponsors are asking Crow Wing County residents to send in their recipes as well as any cooking stories, photos and memories.
"The timeline for responding is really short - so pull out your recipe cards and start thinking," the chamber said in a news release. "Minnesota will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2008. As a part of the festivities, the Sesquicentennial Commission recruited volunteers to compile a Minnesota cookbook. They want this book to reflect what we eat and how we dine in the 21st century."
"Many people have traditional family recipes that they've modernized to fit our busy lifestyles," said Julie Minor with Chef and Company in Baxter. "These, and other favorites that incorporate local traditions are an example of what we need."
Minnesota's centennial cookbook, "100 Years of Good Cooking," was published in 1958. It contains recipes typical of meals, cultures and foods of Minnesota at 100 years. In the same way, organizers want the sesquicentennial cookbook to reflect how Minnesotans cook and eat in the 21st century.
- What foods define Minnesotans?
- Is there a special local product?
- Do you celebrate a regional tradition?
- Is there an ethnic community or a festival celebrating a local food?
- Is there a signature dish from a landmark restaurant in your town or county?
Chef and Company has recruited three area chefs to select the recipes from Crow Wing County. Winners will receive gift cards and gift certificates to area businesses and restaurants. The eight finalists will be invited to meet with the judges at 4 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Chef and Company to personally share their recipes, history and samples (if they choose). The winning recipes will be submitted to the sesquicentennial committee on Jan. 31.
Recipes must be submitted to the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, P.O. Box 356, Brainerd, MN 56401 or via e-mail to recipe@explorebrainerdlakes.com by noon on Monday.
Include the following:
Name, address and daytime phone number. The recipe should include its name, ingredients, instructions, number of servings and any special notes. The recipes should also note how the recipe represents 21st century food in Crow Wing County and where and when do you serve this recipe.
